To make things easy, we have build the following legend to help you ask for the right Internet speed.

Netflix Ultra HD video – 25Mbps
4K video stream – 15-20Mbps

high res audio quality – 1.5Mbps download
-Gaming-
First Person shooter – 10Mbps down and 5Mbps up.
Puzzles or Strategy – 1mbps down and 1mbps up.
-Chat-
Skype HD video chat – 2Mbps down and 2Mbps up.
Facebook or Messenger chat – 1.5Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up.
-VoIP-
One home phone in use – 1.5Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up.
Two home phones in use at once – 3Mbps down and 3Mbps up.
“One HD stream can drop your Internet speed by 5Mbps”
According to Netflix, Youtube and Kodi streams, one HD video playback falls just under 5Mbps. This means that if you had 10Mbps in Internet speed, at least half of it would be dedicated to your active video stream. As a result, the rest of your devices would then share the remaining 5Mbps.
“Two HD streams use up to 14Mbps?!”
When calculating Internet, 5+5 does not always equal 10. Devices connected to your Internet (including the ones streaming) also use hidden bandwidth to update themselves or to check for emails and notifications. Therefore it is best to always add a few Mbps once you have calculated the minimum usage at one time in your home.
