The original “high speed” Internet plan by Sympatico was the 6mbps DSL plan. While this plan is entry level for high speed Internet by today’s standards, it is still the standard in many rural parts of Canada.

The greatest requirements of almost all Internet connections these days is without a doubt the ability to stream video. This connection however is great for someone who does not care for HD quality when watching videos online. With a 6Mbps Internet connection, standard definition (SD) is often workable.

Especially relevant, Netflix says that one would require a dedicated 5Mbps of bandwidth to watch HD videos. Keeping in mind that the devices we use to stream our favourite TV shows or movies often use what we call “Ghost” Mbps running in the background. The result is that you do not actually get a full 5Mbps for your HD stream. In conclusion, we often suggest at minimum the 10Mbps connection if you are only one or two users and you plan on streaming HD video content with your unlimited Internet connection.

In conclusion, the 6Mbps DSL Internet plan is good for your if you don’t plan on streaming video and need to Internet for emails and basic browsing or Internet radio.
